African American History
I chose visual representation as my final project. In this project, my main goal was to provide my audience with something that will give them an idea about African American history. The art above depicts the pain, struggle, rebellion and revolution of Black people. In the collage, I have divided it into 3 parts on the left side of the art, which depicts the past and continuous oppression of Black people, and as if the picture moves ahead, the tone starts to change from the poor era to new life and new America.
The artwork represents the continuous journey of Black people, where on the left side I intentionally kept chained hands, enslaved people, and violence, which depicts the real struggle and life lived by Black people’s ancestors. We can also see the historical picture, where man’s back is full of wounds and scars, which shows the cruelty of the society. As we move towards the right, the revolution of people for Black people’s rights can be seen. The protest signs with “Black Lives Matter” and “Stop Police Terrorism” can be seen in the picture. However, if we shift our focus towards more might, we can see the happy side – music, sports and rap. These elements show Black Americans moving towards progression, excellence, and a better society, where they can not only express themselves but also become their true selves.
At the center remains a piece where stands a Black man looking forward. His gaze are the rays of hope, which are moving towards a better future. Along with that, the Black person’s gaze is stuck at a piece of text, which spells Martin Luther King’s words, “I have a dream.” Personally, I believe the above collage is a wonderful piece of art, which is constantly reminding us of African American history, along with that also pushing forward the idea of a better future, with the king's hand raised up with his crowd.
